Lock checker.

Find out what lock is on your front door and whether it carries the marks insurers usually ask for. Takes a minute, needs no tools.

1Which lock is on your front door?

Look at the outside of the door, then the edge.

2Which marks can you see?

Check the cylinder face, the faceplate on the door edge and any paperwork. Tick all that apply.

3Is a two-star security handle fitted?

The four marks, in plain words.

General guidance. Your policy wording is what counts, so check it or ask your insurer.

BS 3621
The British Standard for thief-resistant locks on external doors, the kind you lock with a key from both sides. Mortice deadlocks and some nightlatches carry it, with the number and a Kitemark on the faceplate. Many home insurance policies name it for timber final exit doors.
TS 007
A Kitemark scheme for euro cylinders and security handles, rated in stars. Three stars is the aim: a three-star cylinder on its own, or a one-star cylinder with a two-star security handle. It tests against attacks such as snapping, bumping, picking and drilling.
Sold Secure SS312 Diamond
A cylinder standard tested by Sold Secure, run by the Master Locksmiths Association. Diamond is its top rating for cylinders and is widely accepted alongside TS 007 three star.
BS EN 1303
The European standard for lock cylinders. It grades key security and attack resistance. TS 007 and SS312 are built on it and add anti-snap tests, so a cylinder marked only BS EN 1303 may not be what an insurer means by an anti-snap lock.
